DB Schenker recently became the largest contributor to Cathay Pacific’s Corporate Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) programme.

This makes it the newest member of the global air cargo community to join the airline’s efforts to reduce overall carbon emissions.

Per its agreement with Cathay, DB Schenker will purchase up to 878 tonnes of SAF for its fleet to reduce the overall climate impact of its air cargo activities.

Cathay cargo director Tom Owen said: “We are delighted to welcome DB Schenker as the newest member of the Cathay Corporate SAF Programme. It is great to have this level of support from such an important player in the air cargo industry to work with us in decarbonising aviation.”

A commitment to sustainability and aviation excellence

From his end, DB Schenker global board member for air and ocean flight Thorsten Meincke remarked that the SAF partnership with Cathay Pacific reinforces their company’s commitment to sustainability and leadership in the cargo aviation sector.

Meincke said: “The collaboration underlines our environmental stewardship in air cargo and supports the global push for SAF by increasing demand for it across more regions across the globe, which will ultimately contribute to a more sustainable future.”

A powerful tool

Established by Cathay Pacific in 2022, SAF is one of the global aviation industry’s most potent tools for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions as it works towards its target of carbon neutrality by 2050.

Under the programme, Cathay Pacific commits to 10 percent of its fuel needs being derived from SAF by the end of the current decade. SAF runs concurrently with Cathay Cargo’s Fly Greener programme, which offers high-quality carbon offsetting through Gold Standard certified community and environmental projects.
