Passengers at Munich Airport can enjoy the advantage of a more technologically advanced pre-departure experience. Passengers may manually enter their flight information or scan their boarding passes into a tablet mounted on their carry-on luggage trolley.

Their flight information and any relevant updates will be sent to them instantly. Passengers have choices outside their departure gate, such as shopping and dining. They are then given location-based offers as they make their way across the terminal using a map that serves as a directory. There is no fee for using the smart baggage trolleys. After going through security and before reaching duty-free, you may hire one at Terminal 2.

Their installation is part of a test programme running in Terminal 2 for the next six months. Intelligent Track Systems (ITS), a Danish software company, is working with us on this testing phase. ITS’s interactive screens have been retrofitted onto preexisting carry-on luggage trolleys at Munich Airport. The ITS “click-on” solution has not been seen anywhere else in the world until now.

“Digitalisation doesn’t always have to happen in the background,” Dr. Jan-Henrik Andersson, Chief Commercial Officer of Munich Airport, said. These tablets allow our guests to navigate the airport and stay updated on their flight status. This endeavour is a continuation of our state-of-the-art innovation hub. Our customers will benefit significantly from the integration of digital and analogue technologies.

ITS CEO Morten Pankoke: “Our tablets can direct users to specific stores and highlight retail activations and activities. Passengers often overlook these when they are in a rush or stressed. But if they can see the deals on the tablet and the time they have to get to the gate using way-finding, they are more likely to check out some store offers if they have the time.”
