OAG reports Kuala Lumpur has Asia’s most connected airport

Travel-centric data platform OAG released its Megahubs 2024 report, showing Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) as the region’s most connected airport.

The Megahubs report is the definitive ranking of the 50 most globally-connected airports in the world, three of which are located within the Asia-Pacific.

Aside from KLIA, other Asian hubs that made it into this year’s top 50 are Japan’s Tokyo Haneda, and South Korea’s Seoul Incheon. This is seen as proof that the regional travel sector has recovered well and these markets are actively pursuing growth.

With regard to connectivity, growth in the region is more widespread, with four airports in Southeast Asia making the cut, and an additional seven from Northeast Asia.

Tokyo’s Narita Airport garnered a special mention thanks to its significant jump from 60th in 2023 to 15th this year.

Taking the lead for low-cost connections

The Asia Pacific also dominated the low-cost connections (LCC) sector, as its airports made up around 64 percent of the Top 25 LCC Megahubs.

KLIA also took the lead here, ranking first as it offers around 14,583 possible LCCs across 137 destinations. Here, AirAsia is the dominant carrier, accounting for 35 percent of all flights and 48 percent of the total LCC capacity.

The Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Manila came in second among this year’s top Low-cost Megahubs, surpassing Incheon with its high ratio of connectivity to 97 destinations.
